On 28 & 29th Oct, Richard Gloaguen and Leila Ajjabou (HZDR) attended the EIT Raw Materials event in Levi (Finnish Lapland) and then stayed  to participate to the FEM conference on the 29th and 30th Oct.

During the EIT event, we mostly had the opportunity to hear about the new call (KAVA 7) and particularly the Sustainable Discovery and Supply Lighthouse in which we are thinking of applying for a project building on INFACT’s results.

Richard is part of The Lighthouse Advisory Board together with: Patrick Nadoll (EIT Raw Materials),  Antti Häkkinen (LUT University), Peter Moser (Loeben), Michael Hascke (DMT), Raimo Lahtinen (GTK), Tina Benda (Geological Survey of Slovenia), Patrick d’Hughes (BRGM), Elisaberth Clausen (Aachen University), Maria Jose Jurado (CSIC)

FEM is an important meeting for the Northern Europe Mineral industry. Attendees mostly coming from Finland (strong presence of GTK), Sweden, Norway, Denmark, UK and Germany. This year, they welcomed over 1,200 attendees in a small ski station… an unsuspected but  amazing venue under the norther lights!

Talks cover the general health of industry, updates on mining and exploration projects of the regions from juniors, EU reviews on Strategy to secure Battery Minerals and case studies from Research as well as a few panel discussions on how to finance exploration projects. To cite a few:

  • PDAC president Felix Lee providing a perspective on the state of the mineral industry within a global context: state of Exploration finance and expenditures globally, within Canada and focused on Northern Europe (which only represents 1.5% of the total amount spent worldwide in Exploration – Finland attracting most of the funds).
  • A very good talk from Evi Petravazi (British Geological Survey) on Battery Raw Materials. A Global and European perspective – discussing the need for more pre-competitive geoscience data such as research into deposit formation, development of new exploration technologies and improved geological mapping.

INFACT partners and advisory board members present during the event: Oulu Mining School, Anglo American Sakatti, BlueJay Mining, Rio Tinto, SRK Exploration, Finnish environment Institute, University of Eastern Finland. All active in Northern Europe Exploration and Mining sector.
